FUN FACT: I used cloth diapers for my son in 2008 and felt compelled to be as naturally-minded as possible with our laundry after learning of his skin allergies. On the word of the Internet, I juiced lemons for hours to make "bleach" for his dirty diapers. I let frozen cubes of lemon juice work their magic in the drum of a washer filled with soiled diapers that I swore would never come clean with lemon and baking soda. The loads came out of the wash impressively clean and white -- I've been a convert since.
Here's the technique. Have fun!
LEMON BLEACH CUBES
How to use:
Hand-wash stains in a bucket of water and add 1-2 cubes. Agitate and let sit for 15-20min. Hang in sun to dry and further bleach garment. Repeat as necessary.
Before the popularity of front loaders, I would agitate 2-3 frozen cubes in my prewash and run the load with a half cup of baking soda. A half cup of vinegar can also be added to remove odors.
It is not recommended to put frozen cubes in a front loader -- instead, pour 1/4 C of real lemon juice into your bleach dispenser.*
(FYI, for household use only. This bleach hack does not prevent against illness or COVID-19.)
